Dear Christie:Well, I'm hardly satisfied with that response. It doesn't explain the entire formula change for the product. I'll give Dr. Bronner's a try.
Thank you for contacting us with your inquiry, Phenoxyethanol is a
preservative that is neither a paraben nor a formaldehyde-donor. We use
Phenoxyethanol sometimes in high water content products to stop bacteria
and mold growth to ensure the safety of the product. We are currently
looking for other natural alternatives but until we find ones that work
and can ensure that our product is safe for the consumer, we feel that
Phenoxyethanol is the safest preservative available. However, we would
never use Parabens or Formaldehyde-Donor preservatives such as DMDM
Hydantoin since these have suspected health risks associated with them.
We understand if you are disappointed with this decision, but we felt it
necessary in order to sustain the quality of the product and to ensure
the safety of our consumer. We would love to answer any additional

Lesson learned? Even when buying a product from a trusted brand, always check the ingredients -- even if it's the same product you've been purchasing for years. Apparently, they can just change the recipe on a whim without notice. Meh.
That is because Burt's Bees was bought out by Clorox. I was expecting this to happen, checking the ingredients every time I bought a new carrot body lotion and amazed that it hadn't happened... until now, of course. Suddenly ingredients like Canola oil and soybean oil appear, presumably from GMO crops and there is no longer carrot seed oil which defeats the whole purpose of the cream being "carrot nutritive". Shame on Burt's Bees for choosing money over ethics and selling to a company like Clorox.

ReplyDeletePardon my French but those assholes have " I feel certain" have changed the best lip balm in the world from a product that had never caused my lips to chap before and dry out to now every time I now use it my lips seem to become dried out flake and feel like they would with the cheap stuff from the cheap stores that have Petroleum products or mineral oil. I might as well put vaseline on my lips. It feels exactly the same. I am so pissed that the product you pay $3 dollars for even at Wal-mart feels like the cheap dimestore mineral oil brand you will eventually end up picking your lips till they bleed. If they have cheapened it. I want to launch an all out blog boycott to make them put the ingredients back in. I used to take my clients a free stick of Lip Balm because I was proud of the little company from Durham, NC. NOT ANY MORE. I am embarrassed. I would like to take Clorox out back with a big wooden paddle and spank their backsides for ruining the best product in America..........IDIOTS!
